By Associated PressMonday, December 6, 2010
HARTFORD, Conn. — A Connecticut man with numerous convictions for violent assaults, robberies and burglaries has been charged with the illegal importation and possession of a bullet proof vest.
Waheed Islam of Manchester, Conn., was charged Monday after undercover federal agents delivered a courier package containing a bullet proof vest from China.
Authorities allege that shipping documents indicated that the package contained "100 percent knitted men’s vest."
The 43-year-old suspect, who was previously known as Walter Missouri Jr., faces charges of possession of ballistic body armor by a person who has been convicted of a violent crime.
He is also charged with illegally concealing the true nature of imported goods into the United States.
He faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, if convicted on all charges.
It was not immediately clear if Islam has an attorney.
